Traditional Beehives

Traditional Beehives

These are traditional woven beehives, commonly used in East Africa, especially in countries like Uganda and Rwanda. They’re hand-crafted from natural materials such as woven grass, reeds, or palm leaves, and are reinforced with wooden tops and bases.

The cylindrical ones with flat wooden ends are typical of horizontal hives, often hung in trees or placed under shelter. The conical hives with pointed tops and stick handles are designed to mimic natural tree cavities, and are sometimes used in more elevated or protected setups.

These hives are low-cost, durable, and well-suited for traditional beekeeping methods. They're designed to house wild or semi-managed colonies and are often used by rural communities for honey and beeswax harvesting. Their structure encourages natural comb building, and their portability makes them ideal for small-scale, migratory, or community-based beekeeping.
