For 16 years, I woke up to the sun's rays filtering through my mosquito net. In Uganda, sleeping under a net was a must because malaria was rampant and posed a major threat to the population. Though the disease was treatable, many Ugandans still lost their lives to it. It was impossible to get a good night's sleep as mosquitoes buzzed and bit all night long, leaving you scratching from head to toe. That is, if you were lucky enough to avoid getting malaria.
Now that I am back in Singapore, it feels strange to sleep without a net. However, I am grateful to live in such a safe country where I can even drink straight from the tap, something I could never do in Uganda.
Every morning, I wake up thankful for a brand new day!
