Bee Smoker Family.

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

Allow me to introduce a crucial tool for beekeepers: the bee smoker. Larger bee smokers are typically used by commercial or professional beekeepers, while smaller bee smokers are suitable for hobbyists.

This tool is an essential part of a beekeeper's toolkit and has been used in the industry for a long time. So, why is it so important for beekeepers? To answer this question, we must first understand the behavior of honeybees. Professional beekeepers would never approach a hive without a smoker.

When honeybees feel threatened, they naturally emit an "alarm pheromone" to alert the entire colony to stand guard. They become more defensive as a group. When a professional beekeeper introduces smoke around the hive, it doesn't mean they're trying to suffocate the bees. The amount of smoke used is just enough to interfere with the bee's line of communication, which takes years of experience to observe and react accordingly. Amateur beekeepers who do not understand or may not know how to use the smoker properly can give the wrong impression to the public or animal lover advocates. They may end up inadvertently causing the bees to become more aggressive, passing on that behavior to future generations.

So, if you encounter an amateur beekeeper who tries to promote a "love the bees" approach by not using a smoker or wearing a bee suit, it's best to avoid standing too close to the bees. One sting to the eye is all it takes to change your life.

I love my eyes and my bees, but I choose to do it the right way! :)
