Richard has been working behind the scenes while the others are preparing the bee farm. He is developing prototype beehives for stingless bees to propagate. The club was not a last-minute idea and it took several years of feasibility studies to determine if beekeeping can be a hobby in Singapore. Surprisingly, Singapore is one of the last countries to adopt this industry.
In 2009, Richard wrote to AVA but was rejected. In 2013, he collaborated with his professor to study the possibilities of starting a bee farm in Singapore. Suitable locations were identified, and 80% of the floral was confirmed to be bee-friendly. The turning point was in 2015 when Richard was invited to a consultancy work around Indo-China region, and he decided to start the crusade in Singapore.
He spent two more years in 2016 and 2017 understanding the vegetation, terrain, and the plight of the bees losing their habitat due to urbanization. The current situation is not favorable for bees because the only solution available is calling pest control.
The club will provide a sanctuary for the bees and education facilities, expertise in working with the bees, and create an environment where humans and bees can live in perfect harmony.
In 2017, Richard revisited AVA with a better understanding of his objectives and direction, and they informed him that they do not regulate beekeeping in Singapore but will only intervene if complaints are raised.
The club is on the right track, and Richard is touched by everyone's passion and willingness to move ahead unconditionally.
